单词 smithing
释义

smithingn.

Brit. /ˈsmɪθɪŋ/, U.S. /ˈsmɪθɪŋ/
Forms: see smith v. and -ing suffix1.
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: smith v., -ing suffix1.
Etymology: < smith v. + -ing suffix1.It is unclear whether the following use of the form smythiyng shows a slightly earlier instance of smithing n. (reflecting forms in -i , -ie , -y , etc. at smith v.; perhaps compare also earlier smithier n.) or rather shows a derivative of smithy v., which is otherwise attested significantly later (see note at that entry):c1449 R. Pecock Repressor (1860) 256 A man dooth a deede bi an other thing being an instrument..as is..an hamer forto make a knyf in smythiyng.
Now chiefly historical.
The action of smith v.; spec. the art or craft of forging and hammering metal to make a weapon, implement, etc. Also: the trade or occupation of a smith.
