Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: sonorous adj., -ant suffix1.
Etymology: < sonor- (in sonorous adj.) + -ant suffix1. With use as adjective compare French sonorant resounding (1530 in Middle French in an apparently isolated attestation, subsequently from 1894 or earlier).

A speech sound of a class including approximants and nasal consonants, produced without obstruction of the vocal tract; any speech sound which is not an obstruent. Cf. obstruent n. 3, resonant n.
