Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by derivation. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: actinia n., -iform comb. form; Greek ἀκτῖν- , ἀκτίς , -iform comb. form.
Etymology: < actinia n. or its etymon ancient Greek ἀκτῖν-, ἀκτίς ray (see actino- comb. form) + -iform comb. form. Compare scientific Latin actiniformis (1833 as specific epithet of a coral).
Originally: (of a polyp) having the form or structure of a sea anemone. Later (more widely): having a radiated form; having rays diverging from a centre.
