Etymology: Probably originally an error for or alteration of an unattested *songnary (see note) < Anglo-Norman soungnarie book of dreams (13th cent.), either (a) < an unattested post-classical Latin form *somniaria (see sompnary n.), or perhaps (b) showing a variant of Anglo-Norman soungerie and Middle French songerie dream, daydream (c1305 or earlier) < songer to dream ( < songe dream < classical Latin somnium dream: see somnial adj.) + erie -ery suffix. Compare sompnary n.The original error or alteration may be the result of minim confusion in either Anglo-Norman or Middle English, subsequently (within English) probably reinforced by association with other nouns ending in -uary (e.g. sanctuary n.¹).
