Any of various dipteran flies comprising the family Calliphoridae, which are typically metallic blue, green, or black in colour and deposit their eggs in carrion, dung, or open wounds. Cf. sheep blowfly n.ⓘfigurative in quot. 1729.Members of this family, which includes the bluebottle, greenbottle, and screw-worm, may act as disease vectors in humans and cause severe infestations of the skin and deeper tissues of livestock.
