Etymology: Partly (i) < Anglo-Norman esposage, espusage wedlock, marriage, betrothal (see espousage n.), with elision of the initial vowel, and partly (ii, in sense 3) < spouse n. + -age suffix. Compare earlier spousal n., espousal n., spousehood n., and also spousehead n.
