单词 sprout-kale
释义

sprout-kalen.

Brit. /ˈspraʊtkeɪl/, U.S. /ˈspraʊtˌkeɪl/
Forms: see sprout v.1 and kale n.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a Dutch lexical item. Etymons: sprout v.1, kale n.
Etymology: < sprout v.1 + kale n., based on a folk-etymological misinterpretation (apparently by White: see quot. 1778) of early modern Dutch sprockel, variant (with metathesis) of Middle Dutch sporkel, sporkele, related to Middle Low German sporkel, sperkel (German regional Sporkel), a name for the month of February (of uncertain and disputed origin).
rare.
(A name for) the second month of the year, purported to have been used by early Germanic peoples. The name is based on a misapprehension of an actual early Germanic month name (see the etymology). The source of the error appears to be quot. 1778, from which all later quots. are ultimately derived.
