单词 bottle screw
释义

bottle screwn.

Brit. /ˈbɒtl skruː/, U.S. /ˈbɑdəl ˌskru/
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: bottle n.3, screw n.1
Etymology: < bottle n.3 + screw n.1The semantic motivation of sense 2 is unclear; it may show an extended use of sense 1, on account of the similarity of the coupling device to some kinds of corkscrew, or it may allude to the resemblance in form between a bottle and some early forms of the device (which had narrow necks at both ends).
1. A utensil for removing a cork from a bottle, typically consisting of a metal spiral with a sharp point and a transverse handle, operated by screwing the point into the cork in order to pull it from the bottle; a corkscrew. Now archaic.
