(a) a usually mild disease affecting several species of squirrel in North America, caused by a poxvirus of the genus Leporipoxvirus and characterized by the development of fibrous nodules, esp. in the skin (now usually called squirrel fibroma or squirrel fibromatosis); (b) an epidemic disease with a very high mortality rate affecting Eurasian red squirrels ( Sciurus vulgaris), chiefly in Britain and Ireland, characterized by ulcerating lesions of the skin, and caused by a poxvirus of undetermined generic status.Frequently as a modifier.The epidemic disease (sense (b)) is one of the factors contributing to the decline of the red squirrel population in Britain and Ireland; its causative virus is believed to be carried by grey squirrels ( Sciurus carolinensis) introduced from North America, in whom it causes little or no disease.
