Etymology: < static adj. + test n.1 With sense 1 compare scientific Latin docimasia pulmonum hydrostatica (1791 or earlier).
1. Pathology. Any of several post-mortem tests involving measurement of the weight or specific gravity of the lungs, used (supposedly) to determine whether an infant was stillborn. Now rare or disused.
