Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin statīvus.
Etymology: < classical Latin statīvus stationary, standing, still, (in military context, of a camp) permanent, in post-classical Latin also fixed, statutory (5th cent.) < stat- , past participial stem of stāre to stand (see stand v.) + -īvus -ive suffix. Compare French statif standing, pitched, established (1611; compare Old French, Middle French estaïf stationary, as though fixed, Old French estatif stagnant).In sense A. 3 after post-classical Latin verba stativa (1866 or earlier), German Stative, plural (1868).

1. Apparently: = statute n.1 2a. Obsolete. rare.Probably a transmission error for statute n.1 The word occurs only in a translation of a document (itself not preserved) from Bengal. Another copy of the same document (B.L. IOR/H/630) reads ‘statutes’. The cited report was incorporated in the 1st Rep. Comm. E. India Company (1803) Apparently II. 205/1, issued in 1772.
