Etymology: < classical Latin acer acer n. + -ic suffix; in aceric acid n. after German feldahornsauer, adjective (J. A. von Scherer 1812, in Jrnl. für Chem. und Physik 4 367) and Feldahornsäure, noun (1814 in an index referring to the 1812 article, or earlier). N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (ăse·rik) /əˈsɛrɪk/.

Chiefly Chemistry. Obsolete.

Of, relating to, or characteristic of a maple (genus Acer). Chiefly in aceric acid n. an acid occurring in the sap of the maple, later identified with malic acid.
