Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Strongylus.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Strongylus, genus name (1780) < ancient Greek στρογγύλος round, of uncertain origin; the first element may be related to Hellenistic Greek στράγξ drop, trickle; the suffix is also seen in e.g. ἀγκύλος (see ancyle n.). Compare strongle n.
Zoology.
Any of numerous nematode worms belonging (or formerly belonging) to the family Strongylidae, which are common as disease-producing parasites, esp. in the gut of grazing mammals. Cf. strongylid n.

Etymology: < ancient Greek στρογγύλη, feminine (agreeing with ῥάβδος rhabdus n.) of στρογγύλος round (see strongyle n.1), used as noun.
Zoology.
In sponges: a needle-shaped spicule which is rounded at both ends. Contrasted with oxea n.
