Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with English elements. Etymons: Latin subditīcius , -ous suffix, Latin subdit- , subdere , -ious suffix.
Etymology: In sense 1 < classical Latin subditīcius (in post-classical Latin also subdititius ) pretended, bogus ( < subdit- , past participial stem of subdere (see subdit adj.) + -īcius : see -itious suffix1) + -ous suffix. In sense 2 directly < classical Latin subdit-, past participial stem of subdere (see subdit adj.) + -ious suffix (compare -itious suffix1).
1. Fraudulently substituted for a person or thing. Hence: falsely purporting to be something; counterfeit, bogus; deceptive, false. rare and archaic in later use.In quot. 1836: = supposititious adj. 1a. Cf. supposititious adj. 1, suppositious adj. 2.
