Origin: Probably formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: bone n.1, set v.1
Etymology: < bone n.1 + set v.1, so called with reference to its reputed medicinal properties (especially its use in bandages for broken bones). Compare earlier bonewort n.With the reputed properties of comfrey (see sense 1) compare knitbone n. at knit v. Additions, consound n., and also the discussion at comfrey n.
1. Common comfrey, Symphytum officinale, (formerly) believed to have bone-healing properties. Cf. bonewort n., knitbone n. (b) at knit v. Additions. Now rare.
