Etymology: < post-classical Latin subeth, subet (1230–50 in the passage translated in quot. a1398; 14th cent. in a British glossarial source) < Arabic subāt lethargy, slumber, sleep < sabata to rest, cognate with Hebrew šāḇaṯ to rest, to cease, desist (see sabbath n.). Compare French †subet lethargy (1611 in Cotgrave).

Medicine. Now historical and rare.

Abnormal, esp. excessively deep, sleep.
