Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin sublunaris.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin sublunaris existing or situated under the moon (late 4th cent.; frequently from 12th cent. in British sources), earthly, terrestrial (13th cent in British sources), mundane, material (from 13th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin sub- sub- prefix + lūnāris lunar adj.; compare Hellenistic Greek ὑποσέληνος , ὑποσελήνιος . In quot. 1598 immediately after Middle French sublunaire sublunary adj. Compare later sublunary adj., sublunary n. N.E.D. (1914) gives the pronunciation as (sɒ̆bliū·năɹ) /səˈbljuːnə(r)/.
