Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin superbia , superbīre , -ate suffix3.
Etymology: < either classical Latin superbia pride, splendour (see superbious adj.) or classical Latin superbīre to be proud (see superbient adj.) + -ate suffix3. Compare Italian (now literary) superbire to behave in a proud or arrogant manner (a1319), superbiare to treat (a person) arrogantly (a1487), to behave in a proud or arrogant manner, to boast (both 20th cent.).
Obsolete. rare.
