Etymology: Originally (in sense 1) < post-classical Latin subrenalis (4th cent. in Vegetius Digestorum Artis Mulomedicinae Libri) < classical Latin sub- sub- prefix + post-classical Latin renalis renal adj. In sense 2 probably independently < sub- prefix + renal adj. (see further note at definition).

1856 J. Watson Med. Profession Anc. Times 178 In the first book he [sc. Vegetius Renatus] treats of the pestilential diseases of the lower animals. Of which, says he, there are seven kinds, the humid, the dry, the subcutaneous, articular diseases, elephantiasis, subrenal disorders, and those which he calls farciminous.

1957 J. F. Smithcors Evol. Vet. Art iii. 105 His description of sub-renal disease is suggestive of azoturia in horses.

2. Anatomy and Medicine. Located or occurring under the kidney.In early quots., subrenal capsule appears to be used for the adrenal gland (which is normally located at the superior pole of the kidney, and was usually called the suprarenal capsule), apparently often by confusion with French capsule surrénale (compare surrenal at sur- prefix (b)).
