A structural unit larger than the smallest unit cell, having the overall symmetry of a crystal and which by repetition in three dimensions gives the entire crystal structure. Cf. cell n.1 16. ΚΠ 1947 C. V. Raman in Proc. Indian Acad. Sci. A. 26 344 The units of the vibration pattern of the crystal are super-cells having twice the linear dimensions and therefore eight times the volume of the static units of the crystal structure. 1964 Amer. Mineralogist 49 1350 A new hexagonal supercell is described in which a and c are two and five times A and C respectively, of the NiAs type substructure. 2009 H. Morkoç & Ü. Özgür Zinc Oxide v. 317 The supercell consists of eight primitive cells of ZnO, where two Mn ions are substituted for Zn ions along the c-axis. 2. Meteorology. A large slow-moving area of intense self-perpetuating updraught and downdraught causing violent thunderstorms, heavy hail, and tornadoes; such an area in itself considered as one large thunderstorm. Cf. cell n.1 17. ΚΠ 1962 Meteorol. Mag. 91 349 During the period prior to the development of new cells on its right flank this ‘supercell’ was reaching the greatest heights and intensities of the day. 1987 National Geographic June 706/3 Like other thunderstorms, a supercell pulls in warm, humid air from the surrounding countryside and propels it aloft through a powerful updraft. 2010 Independent 6 July 34/1 In hot pursuit of 300mph vertical wind funnels, and sometimes taking tourists within a quarter of a mile of the most ferocious ‘super-cell’ storms.
