Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French subscriv-, subscrire.
Etymology: < Middle French subscriv-, soubscriv-, stem (e.g. in present plural and present subjunctive) of subscrire, soubscrire subscribe v. Compare earlier subscribe v. and the Romance verbs cited at that entry.Later instances such as the following are probably errors for subscribe v.:1883 Lyons (Iowa) Weekly Mirror 10 Nov. 1/6 A handsome bonus has been raised to start the new sheet, to which leading Democrats all over the country have subscrived generously.1958 Lewiston (Maine) Daily Sun 10 Sept. 16/2 Already friends of the College have subscrived over $170,000 in advance gifts.
