Etymology: < classical Latin subsecūt-, past participial stem of subsequī (see subsequent adj.) + -ive suffix, originally after French †subsécutif (1478 in Middle French; 1611 in Cotgrave: see quot. 1611; obsolete after 1700). Compare post-classical Latin subsecutivus (13th cent. in British sources).
