Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French substantifique; Latin substantificus.
Etymology: < (i) Middle French, French †substantifique essential, vital (1535 in Rabelais; also 1535 in Rabelais in substantifique moelle , lit. ‘substantific marrow’; 1575 in Paré in humidité substantifique , lit. ‘substantific moisture’, an imaginary fluid regarded as the principle of life in the human body: compare quot. 1634), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin substantificus (13th cent. in a British source) < classical Latin substantia substance n. + -ficus -fic suffix. Compare earlier substantifical adj.
That produces substance; that substantifies. Frequently in substantific marrow: the vital centre, the essence (from Rabelais' Gargantua).
