Compare earlier Sudanic adj. and Sudanese n.Compare Sudania , Soudania , formerly used as a name for the wider geographical region (though not for the later political entities) (1848 or earlier; < either the name of Sudan or its Arabic etymon + -ia suffix1) and its French equivalent la Soudanie (1851 or earlier). With occasional use with reference to languages (e.g. quot. 1837 at sense A. 1) compare earlier Sudanic n.
