Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Or perhaps a borrowing from Latin, combined with English elements. Etymons: subterranean adj.; sub- prefix, Latin terreus , -an suffix.
Etymology: Perhaps shortened < subterranean adj., or perhaps < sub- prefix + classical Latin terreus made of earth, sprung from earth, consisting of earth (see terrean adj.) + -an suffix. Compare later terrean adj.
