Etymology: < classical Latin suī of oneself (see suist n.) + mate n.1, perhaps after suicide n.1 Compare slightly later selfmate n. and the German parallel cited at that entry.
Chess.
A chess problem in which one player (usually White, moving first) must force the other to deliver checkmate, typically within a specified number of moves; a checkmate forced in this way; = selfmate n. Cf. sui n.2, sui-mate v.
