Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin supination-, supinatio.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin supination-, supinatio (J. Riolan 1608, or earlier; 5th cent. in sense ‘regurgitation’) < classical Latin supīnāt- , past participial stem of supīnāre (see supinate v.) + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare French supination (1612). Compare earlier supinator n.Johnson (1755) defines the word as ‘the act of lying with the face upward’, but no other evidence of this sense has been found.
1. Anatomy and Physiology. Originally: the action of turning the hand or forelimb so that the palm faces upwards or forwards; this position of the hand or forelimb. In later use also: a normal or exaggerated position or movement of the foot in which weight is borne on its lateral (outer) edge, elevating the medial (inner) edge. Opposed to pronation n.
