Origin: A borrowing from Arabic. Etymon: Arabic sunna.
Etymology: < Arabic sunna the actions and sayings of the Prophet Muhammad collectively, specific use of sunna custom, tradition, law, statute. Compare earlier Sunni n.Compare French sunna (1588 in Middle French; 1553 as †Zuna).
Islam.
The actions and sayings of Muhammad, viewed as complementing the divinely revealed message of the Qur'an, and constituting a source for establishing norms of conduct and, hence, a primary source of Islamic law; the paradigm or model of behaviour embodied in Muhammad's example. Cf. Hadith n.In quot. 1638 apparently mistaken by the author for the Qur'an.
