Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: acetyl n., -ene comb. form.
Etymology: < acetyl n. + -ene comb. form, after French acétylène (M. Berthelot 1860, in Comptes rendus hebd. de l'Acad. des Sci 50 805).
Chemistry.
1. A colourless, pungent-smelling hydrocarbon gas, which burns with a hot, bright flame, used in welding and cutting and (esp. formerly) for illumination. Also (more generally): = alkyne n. See also oxyacetylene n.Acetylene is the simplest of the alkynes and is also called ethyne; HC ≡ CH.
