Etymology: < post-classical Latin superplus surplus, excess, balance (from 1086 in British sources), excess of expenditure over receipt, balance in favour of accountant (12th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin super (see super- prefix) + plus (see plus prep., n., adv., and adj.). Compare surplus n., superplusage n.
Chiefly Scottish in early use.
