Origin: Apparently a borrowing from French. Etymon: French *surfiler.
Etymology: Apparently < an unattested Anglo-Norman form *surfiler < sur- sur- prefix + filer to spin (see fillatrice n.), perhaps after Middle French pourfiler purfle v. Compare post-classical Latin superfilare (15th cent. in a British glossarial source; probably < either the Middle English or the unattested Anglo-Norman verb). Compare later surfle n. In later use in sense 1a perhaps influenced by, or confused with, purfle v.With sense 1b compare earlier surfling n. 2.
