Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Swanscombe.
Etymology: < Swanscombe, the name of a small town on the Thames Estuary in Kent, south-east England, where the fossils were first found in 1935.
Palaeontology.
Used attributively with reference to an extinct hominid known from fossil fragments of a Middle Pleistocene female skull found in a gravel pit near Swanscombe, and dated to between 350,000 and 250,000 years ago.Now usually classified as H. heidelbergensis or as an archaic form of Homo sapiens.
