单词 susquehannock
释义

Susquehannockn.adj.

Brit. /ˌsʌskwəˈhanək/, U.S. /ˌsəskwəˈhænək/
Forms:

α. 1600s Sasquesahanaugh, 1600s Sasquesahanock, 1600s Sasquesahanough, 1600s Sasquisahanough, 1600s Sesquesahamock.

β. 1600s Sasquehanno, 1600s Sasquehannough, 1600s Susquahannock, 1600s Susquehanock, 1600s–1700s Sasquehannock, 1700s Sesquehanock, 1700s Susquehanoch, 1700s– Susquehannock, 1800s Saskwihanang, 1800s Susquehanno, 1800s Susquehanough.

γ. 1600s Sasquahana, 1600s Suscahanna, 1700s Sesquehanah, 1700s Susquahannah, 1800s– Susquehanna.

Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Virginia Algonquian. Probably partly from a proper name. Etymon: proper name Susquehanna.
Etymology: Originally < the otherwise unattested Virginia Algonquian name for these people < the otherwise unattested Virginia Algonquian name of the Susquehanna River + -o:w person of. In the γ. forms probably directly < the (English) name of the Susquehanna River. The name of the river is formed < an initial element of unknown origin + an Eastern Algonquian final element with the sense ‘river’ (compare Munsee Delaware -áhan ); the original form of the river name is reflected in the α. forms; the β. forms and the English form of the river name show contraction within English. Forms ending in -ock probably reflect the plural of the Virginia Algonquian name of the people (with the animate plural suffix -ak ). In English use, the names of the people and of the river influence each other from an early date; compare the γ. forms, and (conversely) the use of forms like Sasquesahanough at α. forms to denote the river (printed Sasqusahanough on a map in the work from which quot. 1612 is taken).
Now historical.
