Etymology: < Old French a(s)souage-r, -agier, Provençal a(s)suaviar, < Latin type *assuāviāre, < ad to + suāvis sweet, agreeable. Compare abridge, aggrege, allege (Latin abbreviāre, aggraviāre, alleviāre).
I. transitive.
1. To soften, mitigate, calm, appease, allay (angry or excited feelings).
