Etymology: < Spanish tapas, plural of tapa, lit. ‘cover, lid’.
Usually with plural agreement. Occasionally in singular form tapa, with singular agreement. In Spanish bars or cafés: savoury snacks or hors d'œuvres of sausage, cured ham, seafood, potato salad, etc., typically served with glasses of wine or sherry. The slices of sausage, etc., were originally put on top of the glasses as ‘lids’.
