Origin: A borrowing from Sanskrit, combined with an English element. Etymons: Sanskrit brāhma , -ism suffix.
Etymology: < Sanskrit brāhma (also with Benɡali pronunciation brahmo: see Brahmo n.) + -ism suffix. Compare slightly earlier Brahmo n., Brahmic adj.2, and Brahmoist n.Brahmoism was originally organized through a society called Brahma Sabha (also Brahmo Sabha ; Sanskrit Brāhmasabhā , literally ‘assembly of Brahmos’), founded by Rammohun Roy in 1828; it is also known as Brahmo Samaj (Sanskrit Brāhmasamāja , literally ‘community of Brahmos’), which is now the usual name. Compare sabha n. and Samaj n.
A monotheistic religious movement within Hinduism, founded by Rammohun Roy in 1828, which rejected various Hindu rituals and advocated for social reform.
