单词 tamale
释义

tamalen.

Brit. /təˈmɑːli/, /təˈmɑːleɪ/, /taˈmal/, U.S. /təˈmɑli/, /təˈmɑleɪ/
Forms:

α. 1600s– tamales (plural), 1800s tamaules (plural), 1800s– tamal.

β. 1700s– tamalli.

γ. 1800s tamauli, 1800s– tamale, 1800s– tomale, 1900s tomolley.

Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Spanish. Partly a borrowing from Nahuatl. Etymons: Spanish tamal; Nahuatl tamalli.
Etymology: < (i) Mexican Spanish tamal (16th cent., frequently in plural tamales ), and (ii) (in β. forms) its etymon Nahuatl tamalli. The α. forms reflect the regular singular and plural forms of the Spanish etymon, while the γ. forms (with trisyllabic pronunciation in the singular) probably result from a reinterpretation of such plural forms as showing the English ending -s following a final vowel. In β. forms not fully naturalized and sometimes used as (unchanged) plural; in this form apparently earliest via Italian (compare quot. 1787 at sense 1).
1. A dish traditional in Mexico and elsewhere in Latin America, typically consisting of masa dough containing a filling of meat, vegetables, or other ingredients, cooked by steaming or baking in a wrapping of maize husks or plantain leaves.Tamales or similar dishes have been eaten in South and Central America since pre-Columbian times; they became widely known in North America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
