Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin tautopodia; Greek ταὐτοποδία.
Etymology: < (i) post-classical Latin tautopodia (from 4th cent. in grammarians), or its etymon (ii) Hellenistic Greek ταὐτοποδία repetition of the same foot in the same verse < ancient Greek ταὐτο- tauto- comb. form + ποδ- , πούς foot (see -pod comb. form) + -ία -y suffix3. Compare German Tautopodie (1850 or earlier).
Classical Prosody. rare.
A metrical foot consisting of one foot, typically an iamb, and its repetition (cf. diiamb n.). Also: immediate repetition of the same foot.

1992 M. L. West Anc. Greek Mus. v. 137 The rhythmicians' terminology here differs strikingly from that of the metricians, who called the measure an iambic dipody or tautopody.
