Origin: A borrowing from early Scandinavian. Etymon: Norse brand-reið.
Etymology: < Old Norse brand-reið a grate, < brand-r brand, burning + reið carriage, vehicle: compare Old English brandrod for brandrád, ( Corpus Gloss., Wright-Wülcker 5, 38), and brandred, -rida (‘andena’, ( Corpus Gloss., Wright-Wülcker 349, 266); Old High German brantreita.
1. A gridiron; a tripod or trivet of iron. (Originally a grate supported on three legs on the hearth: hence the apparent variety of definitions.) Obsolete exc. dialect.
