Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French terminologie; Latin terminologia.
Etymology: < (i) French terminologie doctrine or scientific study of terms (1720), technical terms collectively (1755), and its apparent etymon (ii) post-classical Latin terminologia (1702) < classical Latin terminus terminus n. in its post-classical Latin sense ‘word, expression’ (see term n.) + -logia -logy comb. form. Compare German Terminologie (1715 or earlier).
The system of terms belonging to any science or subject; technical terms collectively; nomenclature. Also: the scientific study of the proper use of terms.
