Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian teleferica.
Etymology: < Italian teleferica (1916 or earlier; apparently short for linea teleferica (1916 or earlier denoting a cableway, 1894 or earlier denoting a system of haulage also known as telpher) < ancient Greek τῆλε- tele- comb. form + ϕέρειν to carry (see bear v.1) + -ικός -ic suffix. Compare French téléférique (1920; also téléphérique (1933)). Compare later téléphérique n. Compare also earlier telpher adj. and n.In α. forms with remodelling after -ic suffix. In form telefèric at α. forms after Catalan telefèric (a1970 or earlier).
Chiefly in Italian and Spanish contexts: a cableway; a cable car. Cf. téléphérique n.
