Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item; modelled on a Greek lexical item. Etymon: telegraph n.
Etymology: Alteration of telegraph n. (compare telegraph n. 3b), with remodelling of the ending after ancient Greek -ημα, suffix forming nouns (see -eme suffix). Compare modern Greek τηλεγράϕημα telegram (1859 or earlier).
= telegram n. 1.The term was proposed as a more accurate alternative to telegram, but was never generally adopted.
