Etymology: < telo- comb. form1 + encephalon n., after German Telencephalon (W. His 1893, in Arch. f. Anat. u. Physiol.: Anat. Abt. 173). Compare earlier mesencephalon n., prosencephalon n.
Embryology and Zoology.
The anterior of the two vesicles into which the prosencephalon of the embryonic brain divides, and the paired anterolateral vesicles formed from this. Also: the parts of the mature brain derived from this (in higher vertebrates including the cortex of the cerebral hemispheres, the olfactory system, and certain subcortical structures including the corpus striatum).
