释义

boxwoodn.

Brit. /ˈbɒkswʊd/, U.S. /ˈbɑksˌwʊd/
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: box n.1, wood n.1
Etymology: < box n.1 + wood n.1Earlier currency, apparently in a sense ‘wood or grove of box trees’, is perhaps implied by the place name Boxwode (1298; now Box Wood, Oxfordshire).
1. The wood of the common box, Buxus sempervirens (box n.1 1), characteristically light cream to yellow in colour, and used esp. by woodturners and wood engravers because of its fine grain and high density.
