Etymology: < post-classical Latin terricrepus that makes a terrifying sound (5th cent. in Augustine; < classical Latin terrēre to frighten (see terrible adj.) + crepāre to rattle, make a noise: see crepitate v.) + -ant suffix1; compare classical Latin crepānt-, crepāns, present participle of crepāre.
Now archaic and rare.
