Forms: Also Middle English -uel.
Etymology: In form textuel , apparently < Anglo-Norman (French textuel only 15th cent. in Godefroy), < Latin type *textuālis , < textus : see text n.1 and -al suffix1. So Spanish textual, Portuguese textual, Italian -ale. The later English spelling is conformed to the Latin type (as in other adjectives originally in -el).
1. Of a person: Well acquainted with ‘texts’ or authors; well-read; literally exact in giving the text. [So French textuel ‘qui connait les textes’, 1571 in Godefroy Compl., also in Cotgrave] Obsolete.
