Used allusively to denote armed violence as a means of pursuing a political cause, esp. in the Armalite and the ballot box and variants: (the name given to) the policy (as favoured by some elements of the Irish Republican movement) of pursuing a united Ireland through both violent attacks carried out by the Provisional IRA and electoral advances by Sinn Fein.
