Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Achilles.
Etymology: < the name of Achilles (see Achillean adj.), so called with reference to the hero's vulnerable heel (see Achilles heel n.). With Achilles tendon n. compare scientific Latin chorda Achillis (1696 or earlier), French tendon d'Achiles (1695 in the passage translated in quot. 17031), and also tendo Achillis at tendo n.
