Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Portuguese. Or (ii) a borrowing from Tupi. Etymons: Portuguese boiúna; Tupi mbóiuna.
Etymology: < either Portuguese boiúna, name of an indigenous mythological character, also a kind of snake (now applied to the green anaconda and the snakelike South American lungfish) (c1584 as boyúna ) or (in sense 1) its etymon Tupi mbóiuna, name of a mythological character, kind of snake < mbói snake + una black.In sense 2 either a transferred use in English (R. Brookes (see e.g. quots. 17631, 17632) had travelled in the Americas) or perhaps reflecting an apparently unattested transferred use in Portuguese. N.E.D. (1887) gives the pronunciation as (boˌyū·nă) /bəʊˈjuːnə/.
