Etymology: Middle English þriȝes , þriës , þryës , < þrië, þryë, thrie adv. + -s of adverbial genitive, after Middle English anes, ones, once adv., conj., adj., and n.: compare twice. From c1600 spelt thrice, to indicate the long vowel and the breath sound of s, as in dice, mice, nice, twice, etc.
